Our motto: If it doesn’t move, embroider it! Machine embroidery offers a fantastic opportunity to transform a plain lamp shade into a vibrant and personalized work of art and add a touch of whimsy and uniqueness to your living space. We used the Lauters table lamp from IKEA for our project because you can remove and flatten the shade, and Madeira flame resistant threads to make sure the embroidery can withstand the heat of traditional incandescent light bulbs. If you are using an LED light bulb, any thread will work fine.
So, let’s dive in and discover how to create a stunning embroidered lamp shade!
Step 1: Remove and Flatten
Start by removing the lamp shade from the base, ensuring a clean and flat surface to work on.
Step 2: Cut and Prepare the Fabric
Cut a piece of pure cotton fabric to match the size of your lamp shade, leaving some excess fabric on each side. This extra fabric will allow for a seamless and tidy finish.
Step 3: Hoop and Stabilize
Hoop your fabric along with a single layer of iron-on stabilizer at the back. This stabilizer will provide support and prevent the fabric from puckering during the embroidery process.
Step 4: Let the Magic Begin
Now it’s time to unleash your creativity! Embroider your design you created with your Hatch Embroidery software onto the fabric using your trusty machine. Whether it’s intricate patterns, vibrant flowers, or playful motifs, let your imagination run wild.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
Once the embroidery is complete, carefully remove the fabric from the hoop and give it a gentle ironing to smooth out any hoop marks.
Step 6: Attach to the Lamp Shade
Now comes the exciting part! Fold the excess fabric neatly over the edges of the lamp shade or tuck it underneath, ensuring a snug fit. With a glue gun, carefully secure the fabric to the lamp shade, ensuring it stays in place.
Step 7: Let There Be Light!
Admire your handiwork as you place the newly adorned lamp shade back on its base. Turn on the light, and watch as the embroidered design comes to life, casting a warm and inviting glow in your space.
